Counselling Skills

Counselling Skills Course

The Communication and Counselling Skills course is a nine week course and it too is run on experiential learning principles.  People learn best from what they do, and there is a weekly practical component built in to this course.

LifeLine counselling is based on the theories espoused by Carl Rogers, a well known psychologist.  He believed that every person has the answers to their own problems and that the primary task of the counsellor is to empower the client to find those answers.  The approach is non-directive and non-judgemental. The counselling is person centred and is based on the principles of unconditional positive regard and a belief that each one has the desire to grow.

The training follows a logical progression of acquiring skills, beginning with the basic one of learning to listen actively and effectively.  Each week a new skill is added to the would-be counsellors’ repertoire until by the end of the course, everyone has a range of skills which will enable them to deal effectively and supportively with any situation a client may bring. Despite the proliferation of niche counselling organisations, the biggest advantage of the LifeLine training, is that it equips counsellors to deal with the full range of human experience, trauma or tragedy.  And it also enables our counsellors to simply ‘be there’ for those who are in need of a friendly, accepting ear.
